For the 5th year in a row, we grabbed our running shoes and registered for the Swedish SummeRun & Walk for Ovarian Cancer!
This was Dockside Cannabis’ second year participating, but the fifth year for Team Dockside, which has always included members of Dockside Co-op. Asking friends & family for funds in person & on social media, and getting up at 6:30am the day of the Race isn’t always the easiest, but so worth it. Multiple members of Team Dockside have a loved-one who has fought ovarian cancer. Joining & raising money for the SummerRun each year is one of the ways we honor them, and once the day of the 5k arrives, we always have a wonderful, rewarding time.
Each year our team is made of a mix of runners and walkers, and while every participant did an amazing job, we want to congratulate our Director Oscar Velasco-Schmitz, SoDo Store Manager Whitney Phillips, and dedicated member of the Dockside family Aaron Moses for running the entire 5k! The rest of our team walked without ceasing, except to smoke a joint at one point… and then we had to run to catch up to the rest of the teams, so that still counts!
The SummeRun & Walk for Ovarian Cancer was founded in 1994 by renowned Swedish Cancer Institute medical oncologist Saul E. Rivkin, MD, in partnership with Swedish Medical Center after Dr. Rivkin lost his wife to ovarian cancer. 2 years later in the Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research was founded in Seattle to extend survival and reduce suffering for women living with or at risk of developing this disease. Because of the hard work of SummeRun team captains and participants and many other generous donors, the Rivkin Center has made more than $9 million in grants to ovarian cancer researchers throughout the world.
Team Dockside was able to make a small contribution to that massive number by raising $1,080 this year for ovarian cancer research this year. We had a fabulous time walking through Capitol Hill bright and early this past Sunday, July 16th, and our traditional brunch afterwards was full of quiche, mimosas, bagels, and dabs. You have a year to plan now, so consider joining Team Dockside at the SummeRun & Walk for Ovarian Cancer next year!
